無名兵士の言葉—人間を幸せにするものは何か

大事をなすための力を与えてほしいと神に願ったのに、
従順さを学ぶようにと弱い人になった

偉大なことができるようにと健康を望んだのに、
より善きことができるようにと病弱さを与えられた

幸せになるために富を求めたのに、
賢くなれるようにと貧しさを授かった

人々の称賛を得ようとして力を求めたのに、
神の必要を感じるようにと弱さを授かった

生活を楽しもうとあらゆるものを求めたのに、
あらゆることを学べるように生命だけを授かった

求めたものは何も与えられなかったが、願ったことはすべてかなった

こんな私なのに、声を出していわなかった祈りもすべてかなえられ、
私は誰よりも豊かな神の祝福を受けた


I asked for strength that I might achieve;
I was made weak that I might learn humbly to obey.

I asked for health that I might do greater things;
I was given infirmity that I might do better things.

I asked for riches that I might be happy;
I was given poverty that I might be wise.

I asked for power that I might have the praise of men;
I was given weakness that I might feel the need of God.

I asked for all things that I might enjoy life;
I was given life that I might enjoy all things.

I got nothing that I had asked for,
but everything that I had hoped for.
Almost despite myself my unspoken prayers were answered;
I am among all men, most richly blessed.
